1. 2-3 Day Basic SIA Course. Provides an introduction to the field of SIA with the goal of helping participants understand the SIA process and apply it to their work setting. Participants work in groups of 4-6 persons on actual SIA case studies. Designed for persons with some social science background who might do SIA and/or want to know how the assessment helps in the decision process. The course is normally given at sponsors venue (click here to see the outline). 2. 1-Day Basic SIA Course. A condensation of the 2-3 day course using only one case study. Useful for persons familiar with the EIA process, but want/need to know how social impact assessment fits within the overall assessment process (click here to see the outline). This course is only given at sponsors venue to sponsor selected participants. 3.
120 Minute Introduction to SIA. Power point presentation on what it
is, why and when SIA is done, some history and methods, how data are gathered
and what is meant by mitigation and monitoring. Designed for the busy
professional, but helpful if participants have some acquaintance with
environmental assessment (click here to see the outline).
This orientation is given at sponsors venue. 5. University SIA Course. Approximately 40 hours of contact to include classroom activity, lectures, a field trip and hands on experience doing an SIA on an actual project, plan or policy change. Offered as ESTU 418, through Western Washington University, Huxley College of the Environment, Department of Environmental Studies--Summer School With successful completion comes five quarter credits. Requires being on campus June 21-24; June 27-July1 and July 5, from 1600-1745 and July 11, 18, & 26-29 from 1600-1745. Participants actually do an SIA on a real project or plan.
